It’s Friday!!! Happy Weekend to you sweet friend! Wednesday we finished up the Lord’s reply to Habakkuk’s first complaint and today we are going to begin breaking apart Habakkuk’s second complaint.
“Lord, are you not from everlasting? My God, my Holy One, you will never die. You, Lord, have appointed them to execute judgment; you, my Rock, have ordained them to punish.”
I think in this verse Habakkuk is reminding himself who God is.. He is coming to his senses so to speak. He’s like, “Oh yeah. You are everlasting, you will never die.. You’ll handle this.. I know you’ve got this God. You are my rock, my protection. I can breathe. It may seem crazy now, but you will handle this..”
Have you been there? You’ve been in a season of complaint.. A season of questions.. A season of chaos.. Of attacks and confusion.. And then you have a break-through. You feel amazing. You breathe a little bit easier.. You know God has you. It’s such a beautiful place… but it’s a hard place to stay in when the battle is raging.. Habakkuk reminds me of that because in the next verse he does a 180° turn.
“Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrongdoing. Why then do you tolerate the treacherous? Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?”
Immediately after reminding himself that God’s got this, he begins to doubt that God does indeed “got this.” The truth that he knows begins to outweigh the faith that he has. Look at it..
“Your eyes are too pure to look on evil…” that is entirely true….
“You cannot tolerate wrongdoing…” that is entirely true…
But the truth that he knows causes him to question the God that he serves.
He begins to say “Why then???” He begins to doubt God’s faithfulness when just a verse before he knows that God’s got it… That God will protect them… But now, he isn’t so sure.
I deeply connect with Habakkuk.. He’s so real.. I’m glad his story is in the Bible for us to relate to.
The battle in front of him,
strength growing inside of him.. He went back and forth between confidence in God and overwhelming doubt. Monday we are going to look at where he goes next in his complaint but for today, let’s choose to ask the Lord to restore our confidence. I’m praying that I can stay filled with confidence instead of doubt. I’m praying that you can too…
