Our will is the part of us that controls our own actions. God is a God of love and one of the ways He displays that, is by creating us with free will. Think about a relationship on earth. If one partner has no choice, then that isn’t love, it’s slavery. God didn’t want servants or slaves, He wanted children and companions.
Our will is the part of us that makes plans and determines our life paths. Sometimes our free will can lead us down deathly paths. The only way to walk down the path the Lord has for us is to submit our will to Him.
Proverbs 16:1-3 NIV says “To humans belong the plans of the heart, but from the Lord comes the proper answer of the tongue. All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.
Colossians 3:23 NIV says “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
What do these verses have in common?
Long before we were born, God had a plan for us. He knew that we would live in this time in His story and He established a purpose for each of us. If that is true, then I want to submit my plans to Him because my plans can’t be nearly as good as the plans that a perfect God has for me.
Ephesians 2:10 NIV says “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Jeremiah 29:11 NIV says “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Psalm 139:16-18 NIV says “Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand—when I awake, I am still with you.”
How does it make you feel to know that God had a plan for your life before you were born?
Knowing that God has a plan for my life encourages me to submit my will and my plans to Him. I want to experience all that He has for me. I want to live a big life and do big things, not for my namesake but for the sake of the kingdom.
